Nobody wants to be that weird, salesy, obnoxious guy or gal.

That person you meet for the first time and before you get a chance to say a word or two, they’re shoving their product or service down your throat before actually figuring out, if you need it in the first place.
If you want to be able to sell your products or services without being that guy (or gal), then you’ll need some time tested and proven prospecting tips to know WHEN to approach your prospects with your business, products or service.
You don’t want to be too pushy, but you also don’t want to lose sales because you’re too afraid to approach people with what you have to offer.

This week I’m giving you My Top 20 Prospecting Questions so that it’s easier for you to build a relationship with your prospects and not come across as weird or salesy.
Many of us equate selling something with being pushy or maybe even with being obnoxious.
What it really comes down to, is having a balance between getting to know someone and knowing when it’s appropriate to share your business, products or services with them.
Let's face it. We all like to talk about ourselves.
If you want to get ahead in business, you need to focus on your prospect, not your business or products.
When I meet someone for the first time, I ask them a lot of questions.
Take the time to know your prospects. Ask them questions to get them to open up and discover as many details about them as you possibly can.
Why? Because you want to tailor your approach to the specific needs of your prospect.
If you can turn the tables by asking open-ended questions that get your prospects talking about themselves, you will have opened a very important door to being able to approach them with your solution.
I’ll give you a real-life example to help you visualize this process.
I was recently on a flight back from Florida and I sat next to a very sharp lady and I started a conversation with her by asking her questions like,
"Do you live in Florida?"
"What do you do for a living?"
That opened the door to her sharing with me that she was a teacher for many years and was on her last year of teaching.
I told her that she must have been a great teacher and loved teaching because she did it for so long and asked her what she was going to do after retiring.
She looked at me perplexed and said she really had no idea what she was going to do and that she needed to figure something out.
I made a mental note to myself to use that statement to later present my business to her as a possible solution to what she mentioned to me about needing to figure out what to do after retiring.
The key here is that I made a mental note.
I did not jump straight into pitching my business to her.
However, when the conversation was over and she was done talking, I told her a little bit about my business and asked her if she was open to learning more information about how my business could be something she can do after retirement and help her earn some side income.
This is a more natural and relaxing flow than to just approaching people out of nowhere with your business, products or services.
Now let’s say you encounter someone whom you’ve been speaking to for a while and they're just great to talk to but they really don’t give you any information that would indicate they need your products, business or services.
They tell you all the things they love about their life and they are just peachy and full of great energy.
Since these are great people to have in your business, you still want to approach them because even if they don’t buy from you today, they will at least be aware of what you offer if at any point in their lives their situation was to change.
So how do you approach them?
Here’s where you can use an approach I call “My Shot in the dark strategy.”
First, you give them a sincere compliment and it would sound something like this;
“You know John, we’ve been chatting for a while now and I really love your positive and uplifting personality. Now, this is a complete shot in the dark, but I would be silly not to ask, do you keep your options open to working on a side project, if it didn’t interfere with what you’re currently doing?”
“I think it would be so cool if we could potentially work together in some shape or form.”
That’s my shot in the dark strategy which is not pushy and will most likely have your prospect smiling from ear to ear and possibly asking you for more details.
Timing is everything and you don’t want to approach them too soon but you also don’t want to wait too long either.
If you wait too long, someone else could potentially present the business and products to them and that would be really disappointing.
And above all, LISTEN.
There’s a reason we have two ears and one mouth.
We need to listen more than we speak?
